Strike authorized by Ariz. EMS union members

The Southwest Ambulance board has permission to go on strike if necessary as negotiations with Rural/Metro continue over pension pay

TUCSON, Ariz. — Southwest Ambulance union employees have voted to authorize its board to strike over claims of unfair labor practices, including cutting pensions in half.

The decision to actually strike is likely weeks off, according to one union spokesman, but either way it shouldn’t mean a disruption in aid response in Green Valley and Sahuarita, officials from Southwest’s parent company Rural/Metro Corporation said.

Green Valley Fire District’s Chief Chuck Wunder said a contingency plan with the company is under discussion, and if that fails, the district would partner with others in the area for hospital transport service. During the high season, the area sees 12 to 14 transports per day, he said.
