PERAIA, Greece ─ A Greek woman may have been accidentally buried alive after being declared dead. Children in the cemetery heard muffled shouting from the grave an hour after her funeral and notified police.
By the time the coffin was dug up the woman, 45, was dead. She had previously been declared dead by doctors treating her for cancer, BBC News reports.
After her relatives left the cemetery, a group of children heard a female voice shouting for help from inside the grave and called police. Once she was dug up, a doctor examined the body and said she had been dead for hours and could not have been revived.
It would have been impossible for “someone in a state of rigor mortis to have been shouting and hitting the coffin like that,” the doctor said.
Police are investigating the incident and a coroner will examine the body.
