MUNCIE, Ind. — A woman is now an EMT at the same EMS agency that helped save her life more than 18 years ago.

FOX 13 reported that Kim Hiatt and her niece, Taylor, who was 2 years old at the time, were in a car crash that killed her fiancé, who was driving.

“First responders, you know, they are the first to get there, and they see horrific things,” Hiatt said. “They couldn’t do anything for my fiancé, but for my niece and I, they just stepped up and they did their jobs.”

Hiatt suffered a compound fracture and a broken pelvis and believes the skills performed by the first responders saved her niece’s life.

“If they had not gotten her out and treated her, she would not be here today,” she said.

Six months ago, Hiatt became an EMT for Delaware County.

“I guess I just really wanted to help people,” she said. “Not really help them but be there for them because I understand what it’s like to be on the other side. If you can be there for somebody, that’s what I kind of thought I wanted to do.”
