GARY, Ind. — The U.S. Justice Department is accusing Gary officials of discriminating against whites when they hired six emergency medical technicians in the fall of 2006.
The technicians, who are black, ranked below white applicants on a hiring list. But the white applicants weren’t hired, according to Monday’s federal lawsuit.
Hamilton Carmouche, Gary’s corporation counsel, said Mayor Rudy Clay gave preference to applicants living in Gary.
