Suitcase-Sized Kit Enables Voice, Data and Internet Communications for Continued Operations during Emergencies, Crisis, and Disaster Recovery

OSLO, Norway, and ROCKVILLE, Maryland - Telenor Satellite Services, a subsidiary of Telenor of Norway (Oslo Stock Exchange: TEL and NASDAQ: TELN), today unveiled its mobile satellite emergency communications response kit, enabling voice, data and Internet communications during emergencies where the local infrastructure is damaged or destroyed.

The kit is designed to give emergency responders, government agencies, and humanitarian relief organizations the ability to readily establish essential communications for rapid response. The kit also provides businesses affected by storms, emergencies, or crisis the ability to immediately re-establish essential communications for continuity of operations.

Telenor’s mobile satellite communications kit weighs only 28 pounds (12kg) and includes everything needed to rapidly establish voice and broadband data satellite communications. The kit includes a Hughes Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) terminal, a foldable solar panel to generate power, VoIP and ISDN handsets for telephone calls, extra rechargeable batteries and a power adapter to use DC power, and an accessory kit with current adaptors for use domestically and internationally. The kit is packaged in a ruggedized Pelican airtight carrying case, making it easy to transport and stow.

“Mobile satellite communications have proven in recent emergencies to be an essential tool for emergency responders, relief and recovery workers, and for businesses trying to keep their operations functioning during crisis situations,” said Bo Norton, vice president of Channel Sales for Telenor Satellite Services, Inc. “Telenor’s mobile satellite emergency response kit is specifically designed to be carried into an emergency area to keep telephony and Internet communications up and running regardless of the conditions of the local infrastructure.”

Telenor’s BGAN service offers users high-speed IP-based broadband communications plus simultaneous voice (telephony) calling via a portfolio of small, lightweight user terminals. The robust communications service from Telenor is especially useful for a variety of IP-based applications such as streaming video, videoconferencing and Web browsing.
