WASHINGTON, DC — The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International announced today that retired General Richard Myers, 15th chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, will be the keynote speaker of its 72nd Annual Conference and Exposition.
In his term as the 15th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Myers led the U.S. military through four years of tumultuous change on the international and domestic stage. From our engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan to the military’s heroic role following Hurricane Katrina, Myers was the principal military advisor to the president, the defense secretary, and the National Security Council in his role as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The tragedy of Hurricane Katrina has reminded us how vulnerable the U.S. is on the home front. Whether the enemy is Mother Nature, a terrorist attack, or a worldwide flu epidemic, the U.S. must be prepared to deal with security challenges on all fronts. During his address, Myers will discuss how local, state, and federal officials need better communication and coordination strategies in times of emergency.
The APCO International 72nd Annual Conference and Exposition will be held August 6-10 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. Myers will be speaking at the Opening General Session on Monday, August 7.
