Proxim Wireless Delivers Enterprise-Quality, Cost-Effective Solutions for Municipal Networks

DENVER- Proxim Wireless Corporation, a San Jose-based leading provider of broadband wireless equipment and wholly owned subsidiary of Terabeam Wireless (Nasdaq: YDIW), today announced availability of the ORiNOCO® AP-4000M and AP-4900M, key products that are part of an enterprise-quality, cost-effective portfolio of solutions for the deployment of wireless broadband municipal networks.

Proxim’s offering is being introduced today at the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) 71st Annual Conference & Exposition in Denver, Colorado with a demonstration that features dual radio mesh technology, wireless backhaul, built in support for the 4.9 GHz public safety spectrum as well as sophisticated planning and management features.

Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-4000M, available now, enables municipal network managers to simplify Wi-Fi deployment for their broadband citywide networks using mesh technology, with Proxim’s Tsunami® MP.11 solution providing backhaul services. The dual-radio mesh component within the AP-4000M allows creation of self-forming and self-healing non-line of site (NLOS) mesh networks with voice and video capability. If a mesh link becomes obstructed, client traffic is dynamically re-routed, ensuring uninterrupted video streams and voice calls.

Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-4900M, scheduled to begin shipping in September, will be the first enterprise-class dual-radio 4.9 GHz public safety access point available on the market. The solution offers municipalities, agencies and wireless ISPs simultaneous 4.9 GHz public safety and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi edge access with dual radio access points and mesh networking. Using the ORiNOCO Mesh Creation Protocol (OMCP), the AP-4900 may be deployed in vehicles to allow continuous communication with AP-4900Ms statically mounted in locations throughout a coverage area.

The Proxim Wireless municipal network solution offers broadband connectivity to Wi-Fi and 4.9 GHz clients in places where it was previously cost-prohibitive to install network wireless edge access devices, providing municipal customers with an alternative to expensive leased lines, fiber optics, or DSL. “We chose Proxim’s ORiNOCO and Tsunami product set for our entire metropolitan Wi-Fi and 4.9 GHz public safety network roll-out in Jackson, Wisconsin because it enables us to quickly, easily, and cost-effectively cover 100% of the city with high-capacity wireless broadband access for both fixed and mobile customers,” said Don Mouritzen, principal partner of Broadband Network Systems, owner of several municipal networks.

“As cities consider deployment of wireless municipal networks, they face a complex challenge in integrating components from multiple vendors that must all seamlessly work together. At least one technology in this mix – wireless – can now be streamlined, enabling a faster, cleaner implementation,” said Jeff Orr, director, worldwide product marketing for Proxim. “Proxim’s municipal network solutions are uniquely positioned to address diverse requirements, enabling providers to quickly deploy and easily manage high-bandwidth Wi-Fi and 4.9 GHz public safety throughout large and small US metropolitan areas.”

The ORiNOCO Mesh Creation Protocol (OMCP), introduced as part of the municipal networks offering, optimizes available mesh bandwidth by utilizing one radio for mesh backhaul traffic and another radio to service clients. The Tsunami MP.11 firmware v2.2.5 improves voice and video capabilities by optimizing throughput and latency performance and by adding VLAN support to allow for more efficient partitioning of broadcast domains. Combining these new features with pre-existing MP.11 features such as QoS and AES encryption enables pairing of the Tsunami MP.11 with ORiNOCO AP-4000M or AP-4900M APs to ensure end-to-end voice and video QoS throughout large networks.

The Proxim Wireless municipal network offering encompasses backhaul, middle mile, edge access, client devices, and network optimization, including the following products:

  • ORiNOCO AP-4000M for simultaneous 802.11a and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi edge access with mesh networking
  • ORiNOCO AP-4900M for simultaneous 4.9 GHz public safety and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi edge access with mesh networking
  • Tsunami MP.11 for last mile connectivity to a wireless mesh network
  • Wavelink Mobile Manager for monitoring and management
  • Ekahau site survey for network planning and verification

The Proxim Wireless solution addresses the key challenges faced by organizations deploying municipal networks. In addition to serving the municipal network and public safety markets, Proxim provides enterprise and service provider customers with wireless solutions for the enterprise, last mile access, and cellular backhaul markets.
