BECKLEY, W.Va. — Local emergency responders Wednesday dared to dream of a future when the floor plans of burning buildings are called up on mobile devices specially geared toward fire fighters.
Or when EMS workers transmit a live stream of a trauma patient in an ambulance to surgeons making preparations in an emergency room far away.
Or when the biomedical data of first responders is monitored so that quick decisions can be made about how to deploy a team most effectively. A bill authored by Sen. Jay Rockefeller and passed in February could one day make that dream a reality. For now, first responders are lucky to get a reliable cell phone signal in southern West Virginia.
