Medics’ fatigue, sleep investigated by Good Morning America

Paramedic and researcher discusses the dangers and causes of sleep deprivation among EMS providers

NEW YORK — Ambulance collisions resulting from sleep-deprived EMS providers falling asleep at the wheel is the subject of a Good Morning America investigation.

The national television morning show uses several videos of EMS providers who were in collisions after dozing off while driving to highlight the dangers.

Paramedic and researcher Daniel Patterson, Ph.D. is featured in the segment. “Our early research does point to this being a national issue,” Patterson said.

Long and demanding shifts, lack of rest, and working multiple jobs are highlighted as causes of EMS provider fatigue.
