NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — An elderly Newport News man was in fair condition Sunday at a local hospital after a traffic accident involving an ambulance that was responding to a Sunday morning explosion at Flora D. Crittenden Middle School.
At about 7:30 a.m., the ambulance, with lights and sirens activated, was traveling south on Winston Avenue as part of a second alarm response to the explosion that injured eight workers at the school about 7 a.m. Two medics — a driver and a passenger — were onboard, said Officer Harold Eley, a Newport News police spokesman.
When the ambulance tried to turn left into the northbound lanes of Jefferson Avenue, a maroon Ford Taurus pulled into its path, Eley said. The ambulance slammed into the center of the car’s driver side, pinning the 75-year-old driver inside, Eley said.
