LONDON — A young woman, described by ambulance services as in her twenties, has been killed by falling building materials next to a construction site on Hanover Square, Mayfair.
The London Air Ambulance service confirmed to CN that they had received a call at 11.30 am, saying a woman had been injured by falling building materials. It has been reported that a window pane fell from the site.
The service sent a Hazardous Area Response team, two cycle responders, two ambulances and an air ambulance helicopter to the site but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed the incident occured at the junction near 5 Hanover Square.
A spokeswoman for the London Air Ambulance service said “extensive efforts were made to resuscitate a woman”, but “sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene by the air ambulance director”.
The Health and Safety Executive confirmed it was assisting the Metropolitan Police investigating the incident.
Stanhope developed the £28m mixed-use site at 5 Hanover Square, near the location of the incident. It is understood that work is currently being undertaken by tenants at the building. Mace had been working as construction manager on the site until March 2012. Mace handed over responsibility for the site in March and is no longer involved in the project.
Stanhope said it would issue a statement shortly.
