LAKE GLENEIDA, N.Y. — A 6-year-old girl was found floating in a small New York lake clinging to the body of a woman who was watching her, authorities said.

The Department of Environmental Protection said the woman, who apparently had been wading with the girl in Lake Gleneida, was identified as Pamela Kaner, 59, of Brewster, The (White Plains) News Journal reported Tuesday.

Police said the girl was found holding on to Kaner’s corpse several hundred feet from shore about 5 p.m. Monday by three people out fishing in a rowboat, the newspaper said.

The girl was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure, but appeared to be uninjured.

Carmel police Sgt. John Dearman said Kaner was an acquaintance of the 6-year-old’s mother and had been watching the girl briefly while her mother took her car to a mechanic.

“It’s unknown if she had a medical event occur that caused her to drown or if they just got too far out,” Dearman said. “We don’t know. We’re going to have to wait for the autopsy.”
