LONDON — A groom who almost missed his wedding today thanked paramedics who saved his big day.

Max Smith, a 42-year-old lorry driver from Hillingdon, was unable to move with crippling back pain four hours before he was to get married on Easter Sunday.

When the ambulance crew arrived he pleaded with them until they found a local doctor, Steve Vaughan-Smith, who gave him a strong painkiller. The crew took him to the restaurant in Cowley, Uxbridge, where the wedding was taking place in time to exchange vows with Julie, a trainee nurse.

Sarah Wheatley, of the London Ambulance Service, said: “We knew we had to do what we could to get him there.”

Mr Smith said: “The ambulance team and doctor deserve to be paid a million pounds for what they do.”
