York, Pa., Red Cross names its heroes for 2011

The awards recognize community members who have made a significant contribution to the well-being of others without regard for themselves

YORK, Pa. — A family that saved an elderly woman trapped in her sinking car and firefighters who saved a pet from a burning home are among the recipients of this year’s Red Cross Heroes of York and Adams Counties awards.

The awards recognize community members who have made a significant contribution to the well-being of others without regard for themselves. Proceeds from a breakfast to honor the 23 local heroes will benefit the American Red Cross.

This year, 19 people will be honored for their service in York County. A Dallastown family will also be recognized for its heroic actions during a trip to Minnesota.

They include:

  • Daniel Blake, John Dooley, Thomas Gray Jr., Shawn Howard, John Molunhauser, George Schruefer and Jeff Griffith. The Delta Cardiff Co. firefighters earned the Animal Rescue award for successfully rescuing and reviving a family pet from a burning home.
  • Roy Hughes. The Springettsbury Township man earned the Adult Good Samaritan award for utilizing CPR to save the life of a neighbor who went into cardiac arrest.
  • Terry Meyers Jr. and Alan Stubbs. The York Area Regional Police officers earned the Law Enforcement award for talking a man down from harming his wife and baby during a hostage situation without the sue of deadly force.
  • Dominic Englebert. The man from Biglerville, Adams County, earned the fireighter award for going above and beyond in a water rescue to save stranded individuals from a motor vehicle.
  • Paramedics John “Rob” Meyers and Michael Smith and doctors Robert Bischoff and David Crooks earned the Medical award. The group saved the life of a foundry worker trapped in a machine.
  • Donna Watkins. The York City woman earned the Adult Community Impact award for her efforts in increasing literacy in the community for children and adults, both English- and Spanish-speaking.
  • Abbey Rhodes. The Hanover girl earned the Youth Community Impact award for implementing the Teddy Bear Toss fundraising program to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
  • Kyle Mahorney. The York Township boy earned the Youth Good Samaritan award for his attempts to rescue and save troubled swimmers from Lake Marburg.
  • Scott, Eileen, Barrett and Lauren Wingard. The Dallastown family earned the Good Neighbor award for their efforts to rescue an elderly women trapped in her sinking vehicle in a Minnesota Lake. The family was in Minnesota for a volleyball tournament when they rescued the woman.

The Heroes were selected by the Heroes Nominating Committee.
