CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. — The family of a 13-year-old boy who died after a skateboard accident this summer is suing the hospital, saying negligence on their part killed their son.
Drew Hughes, a student at Broad Creek Middle School, died on June 28th. His parents have filed suit against Carteret General Hospital, claiming hospital employees were “grossly negligent” and acted with “reckless disregard”, causing the teen’s death.
Bailey Melvin, the family’s attorney, says Drew was alert and speaking to his parents in the hospital emergency room after the accident. He says as a precaution, Carteret General decided to transfer the teen to Vidant Medical Center.
