For EMS1 columnists, educators, and paramedics Kelly Grayson and Nathan Stanaway, EMS conferences are valuable learning and social experiences. Stanaway is an organizer of the Metro Atlanta EMS Conference (MAEMSC), March 6-8 in Atlanta, Ga., which will feature Grayson as the keynote speaker for the inaugural event.
Networking and education
There are many reasons to attend an EMS conference.
“My top reason is networking and fellowship,” said Grayson.
Educational sessions, a staple of any EMS conference, are a secondary part of the experience for Grayson.
“EMS conferences are where I recharge my career batteries,” he said. “I get to hang out with other people who share my passion for EMS that extends beyond the next paycheck. I also get to interact with readers of my books and columns in person.”
Stanaway also enjoys the networking aspect and meeting new people.
“This conference is in my home area so I’ll get the chance to visit with some old friends, and hopefully meet some new ones,” said Stanaway.
MAEMS has assembled a strong line-up of presenters. Grayson finds value in expanding his knowledge base, and plans to attend several educational sessions. Watching other speakers is an opportunity for any educator, including experienced educators like Grayson, to glean tips and techniques to be a better writer and speaker.
Stanaway is also looking forward to many of the presentations.
“I will be taking copious notes in the presentations by David Fifer, Dr. Ray Fowler, and Grayson,” said Stanaway.
5 reasons to attend the Metro Atlanta EMS conference
Grayson and Stanaway compiled a list of five reasons to attend the first-time MAEMS conference:
1. Great continuing education
The three-day program features quality EMS and nursing continuing education from excellent speakers like David Fifer, Dr. Ray Fowler, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Grady EMS Special Operations, AHA Mission Lifeline, and NAEMT’s Bruce Evans on the Field EMS Bill.
2. Keynote address by Kelly Grayson
Grayson is a well-known and sought conference speaker. Many EMS providers read his EMS1 column, blog, and books. Kelly’s keynote presentation will be the conference’s showcase event.
3. Great value
Registration for the three-day program is $25.
“I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by saying that you will not find such a wealth of continuing education for such a reasonable price anywhere else,” said Grayson.
The $25 registration fee includes lunch.
4. Transport Certification Exam Review (TraCER)
Jim Mobley and Gloria Dow will present TraCER, a course designed to prepare students to sit for the CFRN®, CTRN®, FP-C® and CCP-C® exams. This course is offered through the International Association of Flight and Critical Care paramedics. Although this course is held in conjunction with MAEMS it requires a separate registration.
5. STEMI and cardiac arrest education from Mission lifeline
Mission Lifeline, developed by the American Heart Association, is a program to help EMS systems more fully integrate into the STEMI and cardiac arrest system of care. The AHA recognizes the critical role of EMS in ensuring positive outcomes for STEMI patients. On Saturday at MAEMS conference Mission Lifeline will deliver an amazing afternoon of STEMI and SCA education.
