SWANSEA, Wales — An off-duty paramedic saved her brother’s life after witnessing a crashed vehicle on the side of the road.

Paramedic Samantha James, 27, was driving home when she saw a crashed van, reported The Mirror. When James pulled over, she found her brother, Luke, 25, bleeding profusely. He suffered severe injuries to his right leg.

“I saw there had been a crash and when I went down to look I could see it was my brother,” James said. “There were people at the roadside and I could hear them saying his leg was hanging off -- which it was.”

James retrieved her first aid kit from her vehicle and began to administer aid until responders arrived; her brother was airlifted to a hospital, where he underwent numerous surgeries to save his leg.

Luke, who works with his sister as a responder, is now recovering at home. He credits his sister and doctors for saving his life and leg.

“I could have lost my leg, but thanks to everyone at Morriston Hospital I’m walking again,” he said.
