MILTON, N.H. — Two students and two staff members from Nute High School and Nute Public Library were hospitalized Monday morning for carbon monoxide exposure, officials said.

Police and firefighters went to the library, which is attached to the school, around 10 a.m. after a strange odor was reported and discovered above normal carbon monoxide readings, Deputy Fire Chief Jake Bourdeau said.

The librarian was the only person there at the time, Bourdeau said, and she was taken to Frisbie Memorial Hospital because she didn’t feel well.

He said firefighters then learned an entire class had been in the library earlier in the morning and some had symptoms consistent with carbon monoxide exposure.

In total, 28 students and seven staff members were tested for carbon monoxide. Two students and two staff members, including the librarian, were taken to the hospital as a precaution after registering low level carbon monoxide exposure, Bourdeau said.

Bourdeau said it appears that the furnace malfunctioned and a repairman was there fixing the problem when firefighters left.

Nute High School and Nute Middle School share a building, which is connected to the public library.

The schools were not affected by the carbon monoxide and classes did not have to be canceled.
