Police: Patient assaulted by EMT in ambulance

The patient, who was secured to a stretcher, said the EMT struck him in the head with an iPad after a heated exchange of words

MONROE, Conn. — A 44-year-old EMT has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a patient in the back of am ambulance last month.

Alejandro Ramirez, of West Hill Terrace in Naugatuck, was charged with third-degree assault on Monday after being told there was a warrant for his arrest.

According to police, on March 14 Monroe EMS had transported a patient to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation.

“The patient reported to a Monroe police officer that he had been assaulted by one of the EMTs in the back of the ambulance before they left Monroe. The patient had been secured to the stretcher when the EMT struck him in the head with an iPad after a heated exchange of words. The patient sustained a small abrasion on the forehead. A witness observed the EMT grab the patient by the throat and push down on it before striking the patient in the head,” police said in a release,

The EMT, who was identified as Alejandro Ramirez, was an employee of Emergency Resource Management (ERM) out of Portland, which contracts with Monroe EMS to provide paid staff from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. during the week.

Ramirez was released on a promise to appear with a court date of April 27.
