BUCODA, Wash. — Bucoda’s fire chief and the entire volunteer fire department have resigned, citing irreconcilable differences with the new mayor, who won by just five votes last month.
Firefighters said they will leave en masse, effective Jan. 1, when Kathy Martin assumes office, succeeding Alan Carr, whom she narrowly defeated. They told a town council meeting that Martin spread vicious rumors about the town’s employees and had a vendetta against the fire chief. Martin denies the accusations.
Martin defeated Carr 100 to 95, and the contest has torn apart this bucolic south Thurston County hamlet of 650 people, The Olympian newspaper reported on Wednesday.
