Rift between mayor, fire dept. leaves Wash. town without fire or EMT protection

The Associated Press

BUCODA, Wash. - Bucoda’s fire chief and the entire volunteer fire department have resigned, citing irreconcilable differences with the new mayor, who won by just five votes last month.

Firefighters said they will leave en masse, effective Jan. 1, when Kathy Martin assumes office, succeeding Alan Carr, whom she narrowly defeated. They told a town council meeting that Martin spread vicious rumors about the town’s employees and had a vendetta against the fire chief. Martin denies the accusations.

The fire department’s decision to resign prompted new controversy. Critics called it irresponsible for the volunteers to stop fighting fires and responding to medical emergencies just because they don’t like the new mayor.
