A Hazel Dell paramedic charged with sexually assaulting five teenage girls has been suspended by the state’s Office of Emergency Medical Services and Trauma System.

Shayne Michael Shults, 37, was arrested May 17 on several counts, including rape of a child and molestation.

For the past five years, Shults worked for AMR Northwest. The crimes occurred at his home and he knew his victims through his private life, not through his job, an investigator said at the time of Shults’ arrest.

Over a period of six years, Shults gave the victims alcohol and assaulted them, according to court documents.

On Friday, the state health department announced Shults cannot work as a paramedic.

The department also said that Shults concealed a 1987 conviction for indecent liberties with a child when he applied for his paramedic certification.

Shults has 20 days to respond to the charges. He is free on $500,000 bail.
