Pa. driver hits ambulance, is charged with DUI

Lancaster, Pa. — A Manheim Township ambulance was struck in one of several weekend traffic accidents caused by suspected drunken drivers, police report.

James Good, 26, of the 600 block of North Pine Street, apparently failed to realize that an ambulance had stopped in a line of traffic Friday in the 1800 block of Oregon Pike, near Murry Hill Drive, Manheim Township police Officer Lee Billiter said.

Good’s vehicle struck the back of the ambulance, injuring two people, police said.

Good told police he fell asleep. Police said he failed field coordination tests at the scene, and was arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants.

The ambulance driver, David Smith, 50, of the 800 block of Eden Road, was treated for a neck injury at Lancaster General Hospital, police said.

Nicole Thompson,, 29, of the 100 block of Lampeter Road, who was a passenger in the back of he ambulance, had minor injuries. Police said she fell out of her chair during the crash.

Good was released to friends. He is being sent a summons for driving under the influence of intoxicants and for possession of marijuana, police said.

Manheim Township police also arrested a 17-year-old township boy and Sara R. Schantz, 22, of the 100 block of Hamilton Road, for suspected drunken driving.

The 17-year-old was driving south in the 1500 block of Lititz Pike, north of Glen Moore Circle at 12:35 a.m. Sunday when his vehicle collided with a southbound vehicle operated by Carol A. Brenneman, 50, of the 200 block of Hershey Road, Lititz, Officer Calvin Steidler said.The teen was arrested for DUI and released to his parents, police said.

Schantz was driving the wrong way (south) on Lititz Avenue (one-way north) near Liberty Street at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, Officer Billiter said. She was arrested for DUI after failing field-coordination tests, police said.

In northern Manheim Township, Ephrata state police arrested Ryan Charles Burkholder, 22, of Elverson, for suspected drunken driving following a Saturday night crash along northbound Route 222 at Bushong Road.

Burkholder and his two passengers, Tanya Renee Fox, 22, and Angela Jones, 20, both of Ephrata, were inured in the 9:46 p.m. crash, Trooper Jason C. Fretz said.

Ephrata state police also arrested Christopher M. Clark, 33, of Myerstown, for suspected drunken driving following a Sunday morning crash at Hopeland Road and Clay Road in Clay Township.

Heading west on Hopeland Road, Clark missed a left curve and his 2004 Jeep Wrangler struck a utility pole at 2:40 a.m. Sunday, Trooper Michael Brown reported.

Clark had a minor injury and was taken to General Hospital for treatment, police said.

Also arrested for suspected drunken driving this past weekend were:

Avee Poston, 52, of Hockessin, Del., who was stopped by East Lampeter Township police Sunday night in the 400 block of Route 23 between Farmersville Road and Groffdale Road.

Dustin Morris, Conestoga, who was driving recklessly on Route 222 near Quarryville Saturday evening and tried to elude police by taking a road around Quarryville, Trooper Anthony L. Holloway said.
