FITCHBURG. Mass. — An emergency medical technician from the Ashby Fire Department and her 16-year-old son were killed in a crash on Ashby State Road about 10:30 a.m. Sunday when their Kia Sportage crossed into the path of a pickup truck and the vehicles collided.
Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. identified the victims as Michelle Martens, 36, and her son, Justin Fournier, 16, of 20 Turnpike Road, Ashby. The crash occurred near 1191 Ashby Road (Route 31).
A dispatcher confirmed that Ms. Martens, a registered EMT, was a member of the volunteer Ashby Fire Department. A LinkedIn Web page for Ms.Martens listed her as an Ashby firefighter, a direct sales consultant for Comcast and a fiction writer.
The driver of the pickup, a Chevrolet Silverado, Wayne F. Patenaude, was also injured and taken to HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital, where he was expected to spend the night. His age and address were not available.
Police said Sunday night they were unsure who was behind the wheel of the Kia. The DA’s office, along with state and Fitchburg police, were working to determine a cause of the crash.
