SHELBY TWP., Mich. — A man lost consciousness and later died after police used a Taser gun to subdue him Saturday, the Shelby Township Police Department said in a statement.

The Macomb Daily identified the man as Steven Spears, a 49-year-old hair stylist.

Police received a 911 call reporting that a man was running around Shelby Township neighborhoods in a “state of undress,” the statement said. Police said they found the man near 23 Mile and Dequindre wearing only underwear and socks.

Paramedics were called because police thought the man was having “an episode,” police said.

While medical personnel were performing an examination, the man broke away and ran into nearby traffic, police said. Officers pursued the man and then subdued him with a Taser.

The man lost consciousness and paramedics rushed him to Beaumont Hospital in Troy, police said. Later, he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy to determine the cause of death is expected.
