VICTORIA, Australia — Paramedics are being threatened with the sack if they post pictures of Ambulance Victoria vehicles or staff on social media websites. Employees have also been told to “mind your manners” online, and that if any posts identify paramedics or mention Ambulance Victoria, permission should be sought from corporate headquarters.
Some disgruntled employees have likened Ambulance Victoria’s first social media policy to “gag” orders. The policy comes before Enterprise Bargaining Agreement negotiations, with paramedics unhappy with the 2.5 per cent pay increase on offer.
Ambulance Victoria denies the policy is a bid to gag staff, saying it will “protect our employees and their patients”. The new guidelines, created on January 7, tell staff social media comments can be “as public as if they were comments made directly to the media”.
