Two injured Chicago Fire Department paramedics involved in a pin-in accident worked to treat the injuries of a 12-year-old victim, also injured in the multi-vehicle crash involving their ambulance Monday morning. The paramedics were en route to one of two train accidents, which occurred within minutes of each other Monday morning on the city’s West Side.
The Fire Department called an EMS Plan 1 at 8:10 a.m. for the pin-in auto accident at Keeler Avenue and Madison Street, according to Fire Media Affairs Assistant Eve Rodriguez.
The ambulance was en route to one of the train accidents, with sirens blaring and lights flashing when it collided with another vehicle, Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight said. The ambulance was not carrying any patients, he said.
The accident involved three vehicles and a Chicago Fire Department ambulance, Rodriguez said. The two injured paramedics who were traveling in the ambulance, worked to treat a 12-year-old victim injured in the crash, despite their own injuries, until other paramedics arrived on the scene, she said.
All of the victims had been extricated, Knight said. The two paramedics were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, Rodriguez said. The 12-year-old and another civilian were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in “fair to good” condition.
