BENNINGTON, Vermont — A former member of the Bennington Rescue Squad died Friday night when the truck he was driving swerved off I-79 in West Virginia, sailed over an embankment and landed cab first in a ravine.
The sheriff’s department of Harrison County, W.Va., said John V. Hannan, 52, of Bennington, was towing a U-Haul trailer at the time of the accident. Hannan was moving to Kentucky to be with his girlfriend and start a new job. At about 10:20 p.m. at the 121-mile southbound marker of I-79, the 2004 Toyota Tundra Hannan was driving hit the guard rail where three lanes merge into two. Police found both the truck and trailer upside down and said Hannan was killed instantly by the impact.
At the time of the accident, police said heavy rains were falling, which could have limited Hannan’s visibility and contributed to his loss of control over the vehicle. However, the accident is still under investigation. Police expect the investigation to be completed later this week. ...
