Firefighter stuck in silo during rescue attempt

Both the firefighter and the victim were flown to a nearby hospital after rescuers freed them

BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. — A firefighter attempting to rescue a man trapped in a silo of soybeans became a victim when he was sucked into a drain.

The firefighter was using a shovel to clear the beans away from the victim when he got too close to one of the holes used to drain the soybeans, Bulloch County Public Safety Director Ted Wynn told WTOC.

The rescues took nearly eight hours as rescuers had to cut holes in the bottom of the silos to free the men.

“It is like quick sand…. You can’t move and the pressure of the beans pressing down on you keeps you trapped,” Wynn said. Both the firefighter and the victim were conscious and alert when pulled from the silo.
