HOQUIAM, Wash.— Police in Hoquiam, Wash., say an 8-year-old boy received extensive injuries after he was attacked by the family dog.
Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers tells KBKW the dog is usually kept inside the home, but escaped into the yard Friday afternoon. Myers says the dog may have become enraged by the children jumping on the trampoline in the yard.
Sgt. Jef Salstrom says he saw a large mastiff type dog biting the boy’s head. The sitter and a 3-year-old girl were taking shelter in an open shed in the yard. A 2-year-old boy was inside the house.
The dog charged at the officer and he fired several rounds of his weapon at the dog, who eventually staggered behind a shed.
The three children were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Police say the dog was euthanized at the owner’s request.
