When a homeless woman did not indicate which hospital she wanted to go to last month, a Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department ambulance crew dropped her off 25 miles away.

She was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs.

EMS No. 9 crew didn’t need to travel that far: The University of Kansas Medical Center, at 39th Street and Rainbow Boulevard, was just five miles away. The next closest was Providence Medical Center at 89th Street and Parallel Parkway. Both Wyandotte County hospitals were open and accepting patients when the ambulance was called at 1:30 a.m. Jan. 22.
