El Paso defends officer’s EMT status

Resident had called situation ‘dangerous’

EL PASO, Ill. — A city resident asked the City Council on Tuesday to reconsider allowing one of its full-time police officers to also be a full-time EMT because “it’s dangerous” and could lead to a potential lawsuit.

The resident, Harold Burtis, 63, a retired Caterpillar worker, also said he thinks the city of 2,700 people does not need five full-time police officers and should downsize the force to save tax dollars.

Police Chief Jeff Price said he has never had a problem with the officer working both positions and believes he should be patted on the back for his extra service to the community.
