BERKS COUNTY, Pa. — An Exeter Township man was killed Thursday when the hand cycle he received last weekend at a fundraiser collided with an ambulance in the township, police said.

Steven B. Johnson, 49, was westbound on the hand cycle - a bicycle modified for people with leg paralysis - at 11:43 a.m. when he veered into the path of a Boyertown Advanced Life Support unit on Rugby Road at Stonetown Road, Patrolman Dave Behm said. The ambulance was returning to its station from a call and was not carrying any patients, Behm said.

Berks County Deputy Coroner Jonn M. Hollenbach pronounced Johnson dead at 12:18 p.m. at the scene, less than a mile from Johnson’s home on Pennsylvania Avenue.
