Medic 9 to handle emergencies in Newark area

New Castle County put a new paramedic unit into service Wednesday to handle emergency calls in the Newark area.
The additional crew — called Medic 9 — is based in a fire station in Ogletown and is operating on a power shift configuration from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. That is the time when emergency calls are at their peak, said county paramedic chief Lawrence Tan.
Medic 9 was activated for a few months last summer to handle an influx of heroin-overdose calls when the region was flooded with batches of tainted heroin. The drug, laced with the painkiller fentanyl, was blamed for nine deaths. ...
