Bill allowing physician assistants to take Fla. paramedic’s examination clears council

TALLAHASSEE — A bill sponsored by Rep. Paige Kreegel that would allow physician assistants to be automatically qualified to take the state paramedic’s examination cleared the House Healthcare Council on Tuesday.

If passed into law, qualified physician assistants would be exempt from taking a state-certified paramedic course. They should be qualified to proceed directly to the examination because physician assistant training is to an even higher standard than the paramedic course, explained Kreegel, R-Punta Gorda.

Currently, physicians, dentists and registered nurses are able to be certified as paramedics as long as they pass the examination and also complete the emergency medical technician course and an advanced cardiac life support course. Kreegel’s bill would extend the same privilege to physician assistants, of whom there are about 3,700 in Florida. ...
