PRINCETON BY-THE-SEA, Calif. — The San Mateo County Harbor District is investigating a boat accident that seriously injured several people during the Mavericks Surf Contest last week.

A Pillar Point Harbor search-and-rescue boat, captained by Assistant Harbormaster John Draper, was on its way out to the Mavericks surf break with a just-in-case medical team for the surfers when it hit a rough swell and smacked into a receding wave below, sending its occupants flying, according to Draper.

Of the six passengers, harbor administrator Shari Chapin suffered the greatest injuries. The weight of the fall threw her against the side of the boat, breaking her jaw in three places and knocking out many of her teeth, according to Harbor District Commissioner Sally Campbell. She said the doctors put two plates in Chapin’s jaw and wired it shut.
