West Midlands Ambulance Service said emergency helicopters based at RAF Cosford and Tatenhill airfield, near Burton-on-Trent, were both scrambled to the scene of the accident in Alrewas at about 11am on Thursday.

An ambulance service spokesman said: “The female driver of the ambulance was trapped in the vehicle for a short time before being treated for chest, pelvic, leg and head injuries and airlifted to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire.

“Her male colleague was also released from the ambulance and sustained leg, chest and head injuries, before being airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.’'

The ambulance crew were not en route to an incident or carrying a patient at the time of the collision, the spokesman added.
