MILAN, Italy — A four-story building collapsed after an explosion Monday night, killing at least two people and injuring dozens, police and EMS officials said.
Authorities said the blast sparked a fire, caused the building on the eastern edge of Italy’s financial capital to collapse and shook others nearby. Fire officials said two people were killed and about 50 people had been injured.
Witnesses said they had smelled gas shortly before the explosion, which happened about 8 p.m., according to fire officials.
The blaze was put out about an hour after the explosion and rescue officials searched for anyone who might be trapped inside, the fire department said.
