MERANO, Italy — A Northern Ireland jockey was run over by an ambulance after a bad fall at a race track Sunday.
Chris Meehan, 22, broke his nose after falling while jumping over a hurdle and becoming unseated. He also received 27 stitches for a gash along his jaw.
“The starter came over to help me because I was on my back, choking on my blood,” Meehan said. “He put me in recovery position, with my right leg out straight.”
That’s when the ambulance reversed onto Meehan’s leg, breaking it in the process. His ankle was also dislocated, reported Western People.
“After I left a roar out of me, everybody realized that the ambulance was on top of me and they all jumped up and pushed it off of me,” Meehan said.
Ironically, Meehan’s father is an ambulance driver instructor and some of his other family members work in EMS reported BBC.
“My father actually teaches most people in Northern Ireland and England how to drive the ambulance! It’s bizarre, you couldn’t make it up,” Meehan said.
The jockey faces at least two months of recovery and healing.
