AUSTIN, Texas — A Kyle ambulance transporting a patient was involved in a multi-vehicle crash by University Medical Center Brackenridge, officials said Monday afternoon.

The ambulance was traveling with its lights and sirens on when the incident happened around 4:45 p.m. at the intersection between Interstate 35 southbound service road and 15th Street, Austin police officials said.

Eight people were involved in the crash, Austin-Travis County Emergency Services Cmdr. Mike Benavides said. EMS took four of them – two Kyle medics, their patient and another person – in another ambulance to Brackenridge with unknown injuries, he said.

The reason why the Kyle patient was being transported was unclear, Benavides said.

Austin police urged drivers to avoid the area while officers continue with their investigation.
