LAWRENCE COUNTY, Pa. — Two EMS providers were hurt when a garbage truck hit an ambulance Tuesday afternoon.

Sharon Herald reported that Elite Ambulance EMS providers Ashley Ivan and Audrey Hartwick were transporting a patient when a Waste Management Inc. garbage truck rear-ended the ambulance.

Ivan and Hartwick were transported to the hospital. Hartwick was released and Ivan was treated for back pain.

The patient was not injured.

“We’re thankful. It could’ve been much worse,” Elite Ambulance co-owner Courtney Ivan said. “We’re proud of our crew no matter what, but they checked on the patient before they checked themselves. You can replace a truck, but you can’t replace people.”

The ambulance was totaled, and the garbage truck was driven away from the scene. The garbage truck driver, David Bortmes, was not injured and will be cited for careless driving.
