ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A man was killed Monday night after he was ejected from the Chevy pickup truck he was riding in when it rolled over on Interstate 25 near San Felipe Pueblo.
Victor Correa, 51, died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to State Police spokesman Lt. Eric Garcia. It was not immediately known where the man was from.
The driver Jose Saenz, 57, was trapped in the truck, and the truck’s roof had to be cut out by rescue personnel to free him. Passengers Micaela Saenz, 54, and Correa’s mother Julia Imperan, 75, were able to crawl out of the truck, according to Garcia.
The driver Saenz and the two women were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
One of the women later told police that they believed Saenz had fallen asleep at the wheel as the truck was headed south on I-25, according to Garcia.
Witnesses told police that the truck was swerving and then slid into the median. The truck then began to roll and continued over wire cables.
It later came to a rest on its passenger side.
Saenz was airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital, and the two women were taken there by ambulance, according to Garcia.
There is no evidence alcohol was involved.
