NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, N.C. — A paramedic injured in a quick response vehicle crash is scheduled to undergo surgery, but is showing improvement.
The Daily Herald reported that Michael Barnes, who was injured in a crash while responding to a call, will have surgery on his legs. Barnes’ wife, Nikki , said in a Facebook post that he will have to wear a “C-collar” on his neck for six weeks. She also said nothing will be done to his left knee, which she described as “destroyed.”
Despite the injuries, Nikki said Barnes is in “high spirits.”
“He is still appreciating all the love and visits, calls, help by way of prayers and those that have brought snacks, given money, killed the boredom and whatever else you all have done,” Nikki said. “I could never say thank you enough. It is truly appreciated during this time. As health care workers, we see people every day that have their lives changed forever in a matter of moments, and yet somehow we always seem to think it will never be us.”
Nikki also said a blood clot in Barnes’ lungs appears to be dissolving.
“The recovery will be long, slow and difficult but his team of doctors, nurses and support staff have been amazing,” she said. “We are blessed that this situation didn’t turn out worse.”
