Young brothers, ‘denied refuge,’ swept to death by Sandy

Police commissioner Ray Kelly: “It’s terrible, absolutely terrible, it compounds all the tragic aspects of this horrific event.”

NEW YORK — A screaming mother was left in the street for 12 hours by neighbours who refused to help after her two sons were swept out of her arms in superstorm Sandy.

Police search teams last night found the bodies of the young brothers washed away when their mother’s car got stuck in flood water.

Brandon, two, and Connor Moore, four, were discovered only yards from home where they went missing in Staten Island, New York, during the storm on Monday evening.

Their mother Glenda, 39, a nurse, tried to hold on to them but was overpowered by the force of the storm.

Police commissioner Ray Kelly said: “It’s terrible, absolutely terrible, it compounds all the tragic aspects of this horrific event.”

The boys were reported missing in the aftermath of Sandy, which hit the borough hard with flooding. Police found Brandon waist-deep in water. His brother was found close by shortly after.

Relatives told how after the boys disappeared, Mrs Moore knocked on a nearby door but was told: “I don’t know you. I’m not going to help.”
When Mrs Moore rang the bell of another neighbour, they turned off the lights and refused to answer.

As the storm raged, the nurse took shelter in a doorway, screaming and staring at the waters.

The death toll of Hurricane Sandy, dubbed Frankenstorm, had risen to 157 people, at least 88 of them in the United States, two in Canada and 67 in the Caribbean.
