FORT WORTH, Texas — A 4-year-old Texas boy who was critically injured saving 3-year-old girl from drowning was taken off life support at a children’s hospital on Thursday. Toddler hero Xander Vento saw the girl struggling in the deep end of a Fort Worth pool on Monday and pushed her head above the surface so she could breathe.
But the brave boy became exhausted during the rescue and sunk to the bottom of the pool. After he was pulled from the water, he fell into a coma and spent two days clinging to life at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth. The girl was said to be in fair condition.
In a statement, his parents, Cris and Misty Vento, called Xander “an angel who sacrificed himself to save another.”
