HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — A woman was killed instantly Friday evening when the car she was traveling in collided with an ambulance in Henry County, police said.
Investigators said the driver of a Chevy Monte Carlo was heading south on Highway 1941 in Hampton when he turned left into the path of oncoming Upson Regional Medical Center Rescue Unit. The ambulance was headed north, investigators said.
Two medics, a mother and a young child were inside the ambulance during the crash, police said. Henry County police Sgt. Randy Lee said the ambulance was not in emergency mode.
The impact of the crash was so severe that it sent the Chevy flying across the highway. The car’s female passenger died almost immediately, Lee said.
All ambulance occupants were taken to area hospitals for minor injuries, police said, but those inside the car were not as fortunate. Channel 2’s Amanda Cook went to Grady Memorial Hospital, where doctors were treating the driver and a 5-year-old for serious injuries, police said.
Henry County police spokesman Jason Bolton said the driver is believed to be at fault. Bolton said it appears that he “failed to yield when turning left” in front of the ambulance.
“I would imagine that charges are likely, but of course I can’t say for certain, as the decision lies ultimately with the prosecutor,” Bolton said.
Investigators have not released the identity of the woman that died, but said she was 36 years old.
