Man who fell asleep driving ambulance not registered as EMT with state

The Investigation also raised questions about the ambulance company involved in the crash

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The man who fell asleep while driving an ambulance Tuesday, causing a crash that involved a bus and a car, might not be an EMS provider and is now being investigated by the state of Georgia.

11Alive reported that the Lemonte Weaver wasn’t registered as an EMT in Georgia, which is a requirement to work in the state. Another requirement is for at least two EMTs to be present to operate an ambulance.

The State Department of Public Health is also investigating the ambulance company involved in the crash, Urgent Care Medical Transport, and another company, Select Choices Medical Transport.

State records showed that the ambulance involved in the crash was registered to the second company, despite what the sign on the vehicle indicated.

11Alive reports that when its reporter went to Urgent Care Medical Transport’s listed address, she found an empty building. A neighbor also told the reporter that he or she hadn’t seen anyone there for three years.
