EMS1’s Spotlight articles introduce the products and services of a valued sponsor in their own words. This article shines a spotlight on VRpatients, a company based in Columbus, Ohio that creates interactive clinical learning experiences for healthcare workers.

Where did your company name originate from?

The name VRpatients comes directly from our mission: bringing virtual reality patients into clinical and field training environments. We wanted a name that was simple, clear, and immediately conveyed what we do – real world scenarios without real world consequences.

What was the inspiration behind starting your company?

VRpatients was founded to solve a critical training gap in healthcare and public safety education. Traditional training often lacks repetition, realism and accessibility. Live simulations are expensive, logistically complex and difficult to scale.

We saw an opportunity to use immersive virtual reality to create realistic, repeatable and emotionally engaging patient encounters that allow learners to practice high-risk, low-frequency scenarios safely – anytime and anywhere.

What is your signature product and how does it work?

Our signature product is the VRpatients immersive simulation platform.

Using virtual reality headsets, or WebGL, learners enter interactive patient scenarios where they assess, communicate with and treat virtual patients. The platform integrates:

  • AI-driven patient conversations.
  • Realistic clinical decision-making pathways.
  • Dynamic vital signs and patient responses.
  • Performance tracking and debriefing tools.

This allows nurses, EMTs, paramedics, and other first responders to practice medical and behavioral health scenarios in a safe, but realistic environment.

Why do you believe your products are essential to the first responder community?

First responders regularly face unpredictable, high-pressure situations – from medical emergencies and overdoses to mental health crises and trauma events.

Our technology is essential because it:

  • Allows safe practice of high-risk scenarios.
  • Improves clinical decision-making under stress.
  • Enhances communication and de-escalation skills.
  • Provides standardized training across departments.
  • Reduces training costs and logistical burdens.

In professions where mistakes can cost lives, immersive practice builds confidence, competence and readiness.

What has been the biggest challenge your company has faced?

One of the biggest challenges has been changing perceptions around VR. While immersive technology has advanced rapidly, some organizations initially viewed it as experimental rather than mission critical. We’ve worked hard to demonstrate that VR simulation is not a replacement for traditional training, it’s a powerful enhancement that increases repetition, engagement and measurable skill development.

What makes your company unique?

What makes VRpatients truly unique is our combination of clinical realism, AI-driven interaction and customizable scenario design.

Unlike static training modules, our platform allows organizations to build their own scenarios using our intuitive node-based logic system. This enables instructors and training leaders to design branching pathways, decision points, consequences and dynamic patient responses without needing programming experience.

Departments can tailor simulations to reflect real incidents happening in their own communities, specific protocols, regional challenges or agency procedures, ensuring training is both standardized and locally relevant.

This blend of immersive realism, intelligent conversation and customizable logic gives agencies complete control over how they train, evaluate, and prepare their teams.

What do your customers like best about you and your products?

Our customers consistently tell us they value:

  • The realism of our patient encounters.
  • The ability to train anytime without complex setup.
  • The engagement level of learners.
  • The confidence trainees gain after repeated exposure.
  • Our responsiveness and partnership approach.

Many institutions appreciate that we listen closely to their needs and develop scenarios that reflect real incidents happening in their communities.

What is the most rewarding part of serving the first responder/local government community?

The most rewarding part is knowing our work supports the people who protect and serve our communities.

When a nurse or paramedic tells us they felt more prepared because of our training, that’s why we do what we do. If immersive practice leads to better outcomes in the field, safer interactions, increased competency or saved lives, that impact is deeply meaningful.

Do you support any charitable organizations within public safety/community? Tell us more.

We actively support public safety and healthcare education initiatives through partnerships, pilot programs and discounted access for training institutions and underserved agencies. Our commitment is to make advanced training technology accessible, particularly for departments that may not have large training budgets but serve high-need communities.

Is there any fun fact or trivia that you’d like to share with our users about your company?

We have 85 pre-loaded scenarios with nearly 40 more coming this year! Each scenario can be duplicated and adjusted to fit the needs of any institution.

What’s next for your company? Any upcoming new projects or initiatives?

We’re expanding our scenario library to include more behavioral health, crisis intervention and complex trauma cases tailored specifically for first responders.

We’re also investing in enhanced AI capabilities to make patient conversations even more natural and adaptive – and building expanded analytics tools so institutions can better track competency development across teams.

Our goal remains the same: empower those who serve the public with the most effective, accessible and realistic training possible.
