BIDDEFORD, Maine — Patrons at the Dunkin Donuts on Spruce Street in Biddeford were drinking coffee Saturday morning when a minivan plowed through the wall and into the dining area.

“We had four ambulances on scene, and multiple patients were transported,” Cpt. Rick Dussault of the Biddeford Fire Department said. “The patrons inside the building were extremely lucky that they were not entrapped or pinned.”

He said none of the injuries were suspected to be life-threatening, with most appearing to be “bumps and bruises.” The incident was reported to emergency responders at 10:12 a.m. Dussault said the incident remained under investigation by the Biddeford Police Department. He did not have the names of the people in the minivan or information about why the driver drove through the wall into the cafe.

A husband and wife who were in the minivan at the time of the incident were taken by ambulance to Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford, as were four people who were inside the restaurant, Dussault said. The identities of the people injured were not immediately available.

Responders from Biddeford Ambulance, Saco Ambulance and Arundel Ambulance all helped treat and transport the injured people.

According to Dussault, the building’s structural integrity did not seem to be compromised. He expected building owner Steve Sparangis to reopen after repairs.

“No comments,” Sparangis said when reached by telephone. “I’m a little bit shaken at this time.”
