Okla. paramedics beat heat with ‘cooling towels’

But they won’t be used on patients

OKLAHOMA CITY — Paramedics in Okla. have found a way to stay cool while having to work outside: “Cooling towels.”

EMSA has recently purchased 575 towels that they will split between Oklahoma City and Tulsa responders, News 9 reported.

The towels wrap around the neck to cool the body down a few degrees and are especially helpful when responders are caught outdoors in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

But they won’t be used on patients.

“We have other things we do to treat patients,” paramedic John Graham said. “We use ice packs on patients, these are for medics, but if the need arises we’ll certainly use them on patients first.”

The towels are filled with water and wrung out before being placed around the neck.
